Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University Amartya Sen in Identity and Violence argues that “the imposition of an allegedly unique identity is often a crucial component of the “martial art” of fomenting sectarian confrontation.” The singular affiliation view suppresses the different categories and groups to which people belong, and thus becomes a key factor in fomenting violence.


In the case of contemporary Ethiopia sectarian violence is a direct consequence of colonialism, the ethnic-based structure of its Constitution and decades of failure to bring perpetrators of human rights violations to justice .
